Using Toilet Rolls as Starter Cells

Did you know that you could use toilet rolls as seed starter cells? The shop bought ones can be pricey, and if you are planning on starting lots of seeds, this recycled version may work out better for you.

All you need to do is cut the rolls in half and layer them in a large box or tub as seen in the picture above. Fill each cell with compost and pop in your seed to the appropriate depth. Water them lightly and keep them somewhere warm like a greenhouse or window sill to germinate for a few weeks.

When it comes to time to pot them on, you can transplant the whole cell into a larger pot if you wish! It is also just as simple to peel the roll away and recycle it.

5 Free Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Free doesn’t have to mean second best. Put a little thought into your gift and your recipient will be just as happy.

sensiblyfrugalliving's avatarSensibly Frugal Living

Mother’s Day is about expressing our love to the important women/ role models in our lives. If you buy for more than one such woman i.e. mum, step-mum, mum-in-law, grandmothers, then shop bought gifts can cost you a small fortune.

Why not express your love without spending a penny with these 5 thoughtful and free gift ideas?

Wild Flowers

One pretty bunch of flowers can cost you anything from £5 upwards. Picking wild flowers (where you are allowed, of course) is totally free, and you could end up with a unique bouquet.

If you want to add finishing touches, use whatever you can find at home. Wrapping the stems together in ribbon or twine gives the bouquet a rustic look. You can even wrap the bouquet in an old piece of gift wrap for the luxurious, florist effect.

Cheap Party Nibbles Idea

Have you ever been asked to bring a plate to a party and had no clue what to make? Or do you host a book club every so often or have friends around for drinks? These cheesy pickle rolls are easy and cheap to make.

I paid a total of £2.60 to make these and they’re so scrummy.

Ingredients

  • Ready rolled puff pastry
  • Sandwich pickle
  • Brie
  • Milk (to brush over)

Method

  • Open up the puff pastry sheet and spread over a thin layer of the pickle.
  • Cut the brie into small pieces and dot them evenly all over the pickle.
  • Roll up the pastry into a big, tight sausage roll shape.
  • Brush milk over the end to seal the roll.
  • Cut the roll into even pieces and brush over milk.
  • Bake at 220 for 15 minutes.

Pillowcase Costume Ideas for Kids

These pillowcase costumes can be adapted to book characters and are very frugal to make!

sensiblyfrugalliving's avatarSensibly Frugal Living

The purpose of the following pillowcase costumes is to be easy to make (no sew) and affordable for all.

I have used white pillow cases, but you can make what you have work for you. If you don’t have any old pillowcases at home, you can thrift some second hand inexpensively.

You can watch my YouTube tutorials for all three costumes here: Youtube PIllowcase Costumes Tutorial

Knight/ Prince Charming

Tunic: Cut a neck hole out of the stitched end of the pillowcase, and an arm hole each side. Take a red felt tip and draw a cross on the centre of the tunic. You may benefit from putting the tunic on your child and marking a spot where the cross should go on their chest.

Use a piece of string to create a belt to help gather the pillowcase and give it a better shape. Team with dark trousers…

Malory Towers World Book Day Costume

My daughter was Darrel Rivers from Malory Towers for the last World Book Day in school. Here’s how we did it on a budget…

sensiblyfrugalliving's avatarSensibly Frugal Living

I posted snippets of my daughter’s Darrel Rivers (Malory Towers) World Book Day costume that I have been putting together on Instagram, so I wanted to share with you how we put together a frugal costume that my 9 year old girl is very happy with.

My daughter is a big book worm, so she will not be happy unless she has picked a character that not everyone else is doing (except Hermione Granger who is her favourite, but she dressed up as her last year). So, she chose a character from Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers series, Darrel Rivers. I was thrilled with this as it is a book about a boarding school, so the main dress code is… school uniform.

This is the book she is taking to school, so we wanted to match the cover with the orange tie.

I ordered the tie from Amazon…

20 Budget World Book Day Costume Ideas

With March fast approaching, I wanted to reblog some DIY costume posts to help with World Book Day!

sensiblyfrugalliving's avatarSensibly Frugal Living

With World Book Day fast approaching once again… didn’t we just have that?? I wanted to repost my list of budget costume ideas that are simple to create.

  • 101 Dalmatians. An old white top with black spots drawn on in marker pen and a pair of black trousers. For added effect, you can draw on a spot around your child’s eye with either black face paint or eye make-up.
  • Dobby from Harry Potter. Dye a white pillow case using brewed tea water. Cut a neck hole and arm holes out of the closed end and make the edges look frayed and jagged. For ears, cut the shapes out of card and attach to a headband.
  • Stig of the Dump. You could use the same pillowcase technique as the Dobby costume above. Make the child’s hair messy and cut a club shape out of cardboard…
