Before I start this post, I want to express that if you have symptoms of Covid 19, then you must follow NHS and government guidelines. You can find out more here: NHS UK
It really is the season for colds. I have already had two colds since summer and I think it is due to being in isolation during lockdown that has made me more susceptible. The same can be said about my whole family. We have caught every cold going it seems, and usually, that isn’t the case.
*Note: I am not a doctor or medical professional. These are just tried and tested tips. If you need professional advice, speak to a GP or a service such as NHS 111.

Stay Hydrated
Try and drink more water. If you can drink the recommended daily amount that is even better. That is about 1.2 litres for an adult and Grow by WebMD state that children should have the following:
- Toddlers: 2 to 4 cups
- 4-8 years: 5 cups
- 9 -13 years: 7 to 8 cups
- 14 and up: 8 to 11 cups
Rest
Easier said than done, right? I have young children and sometimes, rest seems like an unachievable dream. Even if you can’t nap during the day, make sure you have an early night.
Vitamin C
Did you know that it is thought that vitamin C can speed up your recovery from a cold? Whether you want to take a supplement or eat some oranges, it is worth helping yourself with some extra vitamin C.
Pain Relief
As a general rule of thumb, over 12s can take paracetamol and ibuprofen. Children can take the child equivalent such as Calpol or baby Nurofen. The store brand variety work out cheaper and do the same job as the main brand products.
Always read the instructions and dose recommendations on all medication.
Salt Water Rinse
Gargling salt water isn’t much fun, but it can ease a sore throat. I use 1/2 tsp of salt in a glass of water. I would avoid this with younger children as it tastes horrid and they may swallow it and be sick.
Honey and Lemon Drink
Another way to ease a sore throat and break up congestion is a warm drink of honey and lemon mixed in boiled water. Allow the water to cool to a safe temperature before drinking it. Honey has antimicrobial qualities.
Raise Your Mattress
If you can pop some cushions under the top part of your mattress to raise the head end, this will help you sleep in a more upright position and may help nighttime coughing fits. It will also help your sinuses drain.
You could also sleep with a few extra pillows to prop you up.
Blow Your Nose
Sniffing in a runny nose will cause headaches and congestion. Blow your nose as this is your body’s way of ridding itself of mucus.
Drink Broth or Soup
Anything high in nutrients is great to eat when you need a lift. Soups and broths are particularly good as they ease a sore throat and the warm liquid can relieve congestion.
