If you have a special someone in your life that you want to treat on Valentine’s day, then this is the post for you. I wanted to show you how you can have a special meal and film night for just £5!

Meal

A fakeaway is the way to go for a frugal, Valentines meal. A vegetable stir fry is a quick, simple meal to recreate as a Chinese fakeaway. Tesco have a stir fry selection that we enjoy and it is just £2.50 for all three items:

Egg noodles: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/290981391

Wine

If you want to go down the wine route, you can get a bottle of Lambrini Bianco for just £2.50: https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/257004239. If you are happy to stretch your budget, you can splash out a little more on your wine, but for the purpose of this post, Lambrini keeps the cost at just £5!

If you don’t drink, you can buy bottles of non-alcohol drinks such as Shloer for £2.20.

Movie

If you have done your math, you’ll see that there is zero budget for a movie night at home, but you can still make it happen for free:

  • Re-watch a movie you already have.
  • Borrow one from a friend or relative.
  • Check you library for free rentals.

I hope you have a lovely Valentine’s day with your loved one. Remember, it is about spending time with each other, not money.

The Second-Hand Birthday Present Challenge

My son is turning 2 in May, and I have set myself the challenge to source as many of his birthday presents as I can can second hand. I wanted to document this to prove that it can be done, and that you can source good quality items. I am posting this now, to give myself enough time between now and then to keep my eyes peeled for bargains.

We have a list of things we definitely want to look out for. This way, we can be focussed on our hunt for bargains.

  • Toy car garage
  • Car related items
  • Four wheeled scooter

There are other things that we will consciously keep an eye out for, but these 3 three are the main ones we want.

If you are planning on doing something similar, here are some excellent places to look for your second hand, bargain presents.

Facebook Marketplace: This is my go to for local items for sale. You can ask to have a look at the item before purchasing, and there is no postage if you collect. Be wary of buying items further afield. Weigh up the cost of the item and the cost of your fuel/ bus fare etc.

Charity shops: We have a good selection of charity shops in my town and I regularly pop in for a browse whenever I have to run errands in town. The more often you go, the less likely you are to miss out on a deal. Some charity shops will hold bigger ticket items for you as they want a sale. If you cannot collect something until the next day for example, ask and see if they will reserve it.

Ebay: I use Ebay occasionally and only if I see a great deal. I don;t mind bidding on items, but I prefer the buy it now options. You need to be aware of postage costs for the size of item. A t-shirt will cost about £3.00 to send (UK), so anymore than that is overpriced.

Car-boot sales: I love car-boot sales, but they are a summer event. I picked up about 5 of my son’s Christmas presents at car-boot sales for brilliant prices. People who sell at boot sales usually don’t want to come home with a boot full of stuff, so they price very reasonably.

My 10 Pantry and Freezer Staples

I like to grocery shop on a budget, and that can be tricky when recipes call for certain staples that can bump the price of your bill up. To counter this, I tend to stock up on pantry staples that I use regularly. This is great to do on the weeks you come in under budget, and that way, you won’t use up a chunk of your budget on the weeks you really need it elsewhere.

Photo by Modernista Magazine on Pexels.com

What are my staples and why?

Stock cubes: I make a LOT of stews, casseroles, and slow cooker meals. One thing I use in all such meals is stock cubes. I like to buy these when they’re on offer, so I keep my eyes peeled.

Mixed herbs: I have built up quite a large collection of herbs and spices, but one thing I always have on hand is a bottle of mixed herbs. You can’t go wrong with mixed herbs. It is handy to have in case you are missing a certain herb for a meal. They are versatile for many meals that need a bit of oomph.

Onion powder: Onion powder is a must have in my house as my eldest child is not an onion fan and can find the smallest amount in any meal. Onion powder allows us to keep the flavour, but to ensure she’ll eat it. It is also great for those times you may forget to buy an onion.

Pasta: I always always always have pasta to hand. The reason for this is to be able to throw together a quick meal if I’m in a rush. I would say my kids favourite food is pasta, and it is so simple to add some cream cheese or pasta sauce to cooked pasta for a filling, quick meal.

Tinned chopped tomatoes: The reason for always having a couple of tins of chopped tomatoes in my pantry is the same as for the stock cubes. A lot of the types of meals I cook, especially slow cooker chilli and bolognese etc call for chopped tomatoes. Once again, i can buy these when I see a good bulk buy offer.

Olive oil: Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an oil snob. I do tend to buy the cheapest olive oil, but I do like to have it on hand. There are some recipes that call for it, and some things I make, such as herby potato slices, that just don’t taste the same with vegetable oil.

Eggs: I always have eggs on hand as they are so versatile and great value. I buy them in bulk and always check for the long dates. I use eggs in baking, sandwiches, salads, and they are a great addition to quick meals such as beans on toast, especially if you want to turn it into a substantial evening meal.

Baked beans: As a mum, baked beans are an important staple in my house. My children enjoy beans of toast for lunch, but we also add as a side to many meals. I buy a 4 pack for just £1, so they are great value, healthy, and can bulk out nay meal.

Frozen vegetables: I always have to have frozen vegetables on hand. Buying when they’re on offer and storing in the freezer until I need them is a must for those weeks when the budget is really tight. I love being able to just buy the meat for a roast and knowing I have vegetables ready to go in the freezer. Sometimes, I have shop bought packs, sometimes, it is leftover veg that I have blanched and frozen. Either way, I rest easy knowing I have some ready to go.

Gravy: We are huge fans of Bisto chicken gravy. Yes, we have that gravy with any meat. I like to have gravy on hand to add to slow cooker recipes such as savoury mince, and for some meals that include vegetables. As the Bisto gravy is a little dearer, we only buy it when it is half price and stock up.

Homemade, Non-Toxic Play Dough

My 20 month old son loves to join in with what his 9 year old sister is doing. However, modelling clay is out of the question as he does still like to put things in his mouth. That was when we decided to make our own non-toxic play dough for the two of them to enjoy together. It works out much cheaper than buying the shop bought stuff, and both toddler and 9 year old can safely spend time together.

What You Will Need:

  • 8 tbsp Plain flour
  • 60ml Water
  • 2 tbsp table salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • Storage bag or tub

Method:

  • Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl with a spoon, and then knead until smooth. If necessary, add a little extra flour to get the smooth not sticky texture. We kneaded the dough for about 8 minutes.
  • If you are adding food colouring, be sure to add food colouring a few drops at a time until you get your desired colour. Too much will dye your hands during play.
  • Roll into a ball and store in the fridge in a tub or bag. Chill for about 30 minutes before play.

Growing Cress at Home

Growing cress is great as an experiment for kids and can save you a lot of money if you regularly buy it for salads etc. Growing cress is also insanely easy to do. I was shocked by how many of my friends didn’t know that cress can be grown without soil. Yep, that’s right!

What You Will Need:

  • A container such as an egg box (we used a chocolate box)
  • Cotton balls
  • Cress seeds
  • Water

Instructions:

  • Fill your container with the cotton wool balls.
  • Get each cotton ball wet.
  • Sprinkle some cress seeds on each cotton ball.
  • Press the seeds down gently.
  • Place in a warm, sunny spot.
  • Dampen the balls a little when they need it.
  • Watch and wait for your cress to grow.

Scavenger Hunt Printables

January can feel like a long month, especially in regards to finances. The kids still need entertaining, but when funds are tight it can be hard to think up ways to engage them and provide them with a chance to exercise.

I hope these printables provide you and your family with some free, frugal fun. Please, don’t forget to follow the link back to my previous scavenger hunt post for more ideas in the future.

My 2020 Goals

It’s that time again… annual goals time. I love this time of year; it feels like we can reassess, reboot, and start off on the right foot. I have many goals related to my family life and Sensibly Frugal Living.

  • Grow my Sensibly Frugal Living Instagram Page.
  • Grow my Sensibly Frugal Living blog following.
  • Work with relevant sponsors and brands. (I had multiple offers last year, but only one fit with my Sensibly Frugal Living ideology. I won’t work with brands that do not represent what I am trying to achieve, but I am open to working with appropriate brand and sponsors.)
  • Start researching the idea of writing a Sensibly Frugal book.
  • Monthly Frugal Living Instagram challenge #sensiblyfrugalliving20
  • 2 (or possibly 3) cash flowed family mini breaks.
  • Declutter (donate and sell items).
  • Cash flow my daughter’s ‘big’ birthday party.
  • Save a rainy day fund (responsible for car repairs etc).
